Charming Games of Light and Shade: Bellevue Hill Residence in Sydney

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 06:47 AM PST

dKO architecture have completed Bellevue Hill, an intriguing contemporary residence located in Bellevue Hill, Sydney, Australia. Here is the description we received from the architects: “A stately Spanish Mission residence received a 21st Century makeover through the addition of two apartments with fabulous city and harbour views. Beyond the threshold of the entry the house shifts and splits into 2 private residences. Flexible light-filled living zones are revealed almost immediately, with an emphasis on visual mass and height. The seamless terrace extensions visually stretch the space, maximizing vistas to the harbour and surrounds. The intent of the select materials and interior design were to combine ease and comfort – where there is minimal visual noise on show. The conservative palette intended to provide a serene and calming environment that was restrained and elegant.

Dense, almost muted materials, with subtle hues bring calm order – whilst still maintaining an appropriately strong presence. Integration of all joinery and services was a key requirement to simplify the design.  Lighting was considered throughout the design process. We believe good lighting should be both functional and aesthetic while creating ambience both internally and externally. Ultimately the resultant aim was to indulge in a monochromatic home of smooth surfaces and planes, light and shadow. The linear lighting plan employed, was consistently arranged as long pelmets or coffers – to wash, bounce and reflect light off the surfaces and almost evaporate into the space. By day and by night the home is a triumph – it glows. Every surface has a purpose – to harness light.”

How to Prepare your Home for the Spring Season

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 05:51 AM PST

Spring is right around the corner, and for most home owners it's an exciting time to get your home ready. In the winter time, many portions of your home are neglected or aren't used as often because of home owners staying inside their homes. From the interiors of your home to the exterior, getting your home ready for spring will ensure you'll be ready to enjoy the warmer weather once it hits. Space out your maintenance tips and by time spring is here, you will be able to enjoy the season!

spring exterior e1298730438275 How to Prepare your Home for the Spring Season

  • Start on your exterior: The outside of your home has taken more wear and tear from the harsh winter, than the interior so start here. Walk around your home and examine caulking around windows and doors, as well as open windows and doors and look at weather stripping. Replace old or cracking caulk and replace weather stripping. Inspect the roof for broken or missing shingles, or tiles, and clean out gutters and downspouts at the same time.
  • Landscaping tips: While it may not be time for you to start planting flowers and watering your lawn, it isn't too early to ensure you will have ready your garden hoses, walkways, and adjacent areas to your landscaping. Replace cracked or old garden hoses, and rake away leaves, tree limbs and debris from sidewalks, plant beds and surrounding areas. If you no longer have snow in your area, now is a good time to start planning out your spring landscaping ideas and lawn care maintenance regimen. Pressure wash concrete and paver areas that have become dirty and power wash vinyl siding, brick walls and vertical surfaces on your home if need be.

  • Check your interior systems: The fall and spring are the two most important times to review your home's major HVAC – heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems. Right before the harsh climatic changes are going to occur. Ensure air filters have been replaced or cleaned and stock up on new air filters if you use disposable one. Check your air conditioner before the summer to ensure it is in good working order. If you need to have a service person look at it now, it will be a lot less expensive than 3 months from now.

  • Interior spring cleaning: By now your windows – inside and out could use a cleaning. You will be surprised how much you can see out your windows, once they are cleaned. Clean off ceiling fans, and clean out fireplaces from use over the winter. Test your emergency systems in your home: home alarm, smoke fire alarm, fire extinguisher, and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are working properly. Most home owners forget to test these regularly; fall and spring maintenance time is a perfect opportunity to ensure they're in good working order.

Preparing your home for the spring is rewarding now, and 3 months from now! Your home goes through changes as it ages, and climatic conditions change. Spring maintenance is a good idea for everyone, and even more important if you're considering putting your home on the market soon. Home buyers want to ensure that all systems have been well attended and taken care of before buying a home. If you're concerned you will miss something, hire a professional home inspector – they will cover the entire home from top to bottom. What are you waiting for? Get started, the warm weather is on its way!

Freshome readers, do you have any helpful spring cleaning/maintenance tips to add to the list?

Inspiring Home Design from Our Readers [As Seen On Our Facebook Page]

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 04:20 AM PST

We love it when we receive inspiring decorations from our readers. This way we are able to demonstrate that some projects are realistic and even easy to put to practice. We received this particular home located in Pretoria, South Africa from Sacha, one of our readers , after she had uploaded the photo of the bedroom on our Facebook page, here. “What a beautiful project!”- we thought…”why not feature it on Freshome?”. As a consequence, here is the description we received from Sacha: The inspiration and idea behind the spare bedroom project came from a strip of Fornasetti wallpaper we had. We framed it in the bathroom and put it up above the bath. I used yellow to add a playful touch. The dark grey walls worked really well as the space is quite large, it really creates such a warm, cosy effect in the room. Most items in the bedroom are upcycled pieces. The headboard we found on a dump site, we just painted it black. The side table we found in a antique shop it was a old linen box.The lockers were found in a pawn shop, we had them powder coated and found the numbers on them at a car boot sale. Who says you can only sleep in the main bedroom? Freshome readers, we know most of you have some incredible decorations to show to the world, so here is your chance! Simply upload a photo on our Facebook page and we (along with the rest of the 76,115 Freshome fans) will provide a valuable feedback.

Modern Family House Makeover: Woollahra 1 by Stanic Harding Architecture

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 03:21 AM PST

Residence that have special architectural features come in many shapes and sizes. Take, for example, this versatile dwelling, named Woollahra 1, that shows off the original facade but offers the modern conditions and appearance of a contemporary designed structure. Constructed on a ridge overlooking Cooper Park in Sydney, Australia, the home “involved the complete removal of all other structure and the excavation of a new complete floor level under the existing street entry level including a pool.”  The terrain on which the residence rests covers 2880 square feet, enough space to include features like the swimming pool in the backyard and the many entertaining spaces inside. Stanic Harding Architecture designed the residence as a place that is both modern and traditional.

The client lived here as a child, so the property needed a modern makeover to suit the family life: “The street frontage had to be restored so we endeavored to create a contrasting contemporary rear facade that addressed the northern aspect and the Park. The edge treatment of the new rear balcony literally frames these views. The small scale of the footprint resulted in the need for careful spatial connects both horizontally and vertically to extend the available space. A new slatted light court replaces the existing front terrace. Floor level changes, joinery elements and ceiling treatments create and conceal spaces.

Exceptional Aviation Inspired Chest: The Blackhawk Chest by Restoration Hardware

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 02:00 AM PST

Californian based company Restoration Hardware drew inspiration from “the gleaming nose cones and fuselages of mid-20th-century aircraft” to create the beautiful, shining chest you can see below. They named it the Blackhawk Chest as a reminder of the elegant and bold shape of a vintage aircraft brought inside to adorn a residence that will surely be subject to admiration. Made from polished aluminium panels wrapped around solid hardwood and accentuated by rough-looking steel screws, the chest has three drawers lined with black cotton canvas. All the dents and small imperfections were especially created to give a vintage look to this amazing piece of furniture: “Aluminium has a matte finish that’s lightly distressed for a vintage look; intentional nicks, dings, small scratches and other imperfections are to be expected and add to the character and uniqueness of each item.” This is the perfect piece for an aviation enthusiast, surprising every buyer with a unique chest design built to create a glamorous, industrial atmosphere in the room. Keep it glamorous by occasionally buffing it with metal polish.

Surprising Addition to a Small Residence: The House on Kilrenney Avenue

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 11:13 AM PST

Built in the Cheviot Hills of Los Angeles, California, the House on Kilrenney Avenue is a result of the collaborative efforts of IKONIKO and Becker General Contractors. Constructed using an existing one storey house built in 1960, the residence preserved the existing building's exterior walls, floor slab and foundations, adding another storey and using contemporary materials to extend the house to suit the resident’s wishes and needs. The front part of the house received a modern appearance, while the backyard was properly extended to offer a space of relaxation. The initial structure of the house served as a base for the design of the residence. 12 feet frameless glass walls surround the living room from three sides, creating a panoramic platform offering views of the surrounding lush vegetation. A wooden platform on the kitchen ceiling hides the ventilation system. The next level of the home shelters the bedrooms and the master bedroom has its own terrace that opens in the backyard, offering the inhabitants a luxurious stress-free retreat.
