Restaurant Design with Views of the North Sea: Pure C by Lieven Musschoot

Posted: 04 Mar 2011 06:09 AM PST

Bars are places for meeting people and enjoying a cup of your favourite drink. Combined with an excellent design, a bar can also be a surprising place to draw inspiration from, like the Pure C bar and restaurant in Cadzand-Bad, The Netherlands. Created by Lieven Musschoot, the bar design is filled with light, creating a relaxed atmosphere for family and friends. The dunes and the North Sea offer amazing panoramas that can be enjoyed from any part of the restaurant. With a capacity of 180 persons, Pure C is divided into different zones with various designs and organization. You can choose between long tables in black wood trunk for large groups or small, two-person tables discreetly hidden by light white curtains. Large oval sitting islands occupy a central space in the design, giving the clients the possibility of relaxing and enjoying the meal and view. The designers say that : “At night the skylights have a golden shine from the gold-covered with circular discs of light fixtures.” A black stretch acoustic ceiling covers the bar area and black glass walls further define the space. A gas fireplace with floating glass offers an oasis of relaxation in the middle of the restaurant. [Photos by Koen Van Damme]

Creative & Colorful Storage System Integrated in a Steel Frame

Posted: 04 Mar 2011 03:46 AM PST

Just when we thought we’ve seen it all shelving-wise, here is a creative design that proves us wrong. Developed by Belgian designer Koenraad Ruys for company Moca, the Framed Sideboard looks just like a common storage system, if you disregard the fact that it is integrated in an elegant black steel frame. The product consists of five separate compartments of different colors and sizes which combine asymmetrically in an unexpected manner. Having a stylish, simple design, the product is easy to integrate in almost any contemporary interior, as long as the designer will pay attention to the color palette surrounding it. Found on CubeMe, the original looking storage system is not only very practical, but also vivid and eye-catching.

Unique Bedroom Design by Steve Kuhl Featuring a Pirate Ship

Posted: 04 Mar 2011 12:25 AM PST

Designed by Steve Kuhl, this amazing pirate inspired bedroom accomplishes a dream for pirate enthusiasts of all ages. Ingeniously constructed, the unique bedroom can be accessed by letting go of all fears and becoming a child again: at a superior floor, a hole in the wall takes you sliding down a slide to a comfortable pillow located in the actual bedroom. Once you get up, the eyes immediately rise to meet a wonderful, fairy tale structure: a large pirate ship high on the ceiling. A wooden rope bridge is used to access the ship, where the crow’s nest reigns, alongside a second bed, for guests. The crow’s nest was made using a ten inch hand-hewn timber for extra strength and a rope connects it to the dressing below. The structure of the ship was carefully created: “We used 2×12 ribs to construct the hull of the ship, covering them with layers of 1/2 inch plywood to act as the planking. Our genius faux finisher developed a bomb-proof blend of plaster and epoxy with integrated colouring to simulate an old ship’s hull.” There is another way to access the bedroom: through a door that also hides the magic kingdom of the sea. A jail cell with a custom steel door meets whoever enters the room. It also serves as the base of the rope bridge. This astonishing interior design will help the child grow up in a creative environment, don’t you think?

Modern Lounge Chair Inspired by Corncobs: The Mosaiik Lounge Chair

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 08:35 AM PST

Once the designers start working, the furniture they create and the solutions they find help improve the furniture industry. If the designer is a young student that comes up with amazing designs, the market has good chances to rule out average design. Swedish design student Annika Göransson is one of those designers that creates pieces for the years to come, with a modern touch and amazing shapes. The Mosaiik Lounge Chair, exhibited at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, is a lounge chair with a metal grid serving as support for many colourful foam cubes: 297 to be exact. Resembling corncobs and sunflower buds, the upholstery defines the shape of the lounge chair.

Mosaiik Lounge Chair 5 Modern Lounge Chair Inspired by Corncobs: The Mosaiik Lounge ChairThe designer says that: “By pressing the cubes through a wool fabric a smooth surface is created on top while a rough structure forms in the back. By leaving the back uncovered, the user can experience the different structures created by the upholstering technique and also gain an understanding of how the seat is constructed. The simple silhouette of Mosaiik is complemented by a pattern that emphasize the square element of the furniture. The final result is a lounge chair created by a mosaic of soft cubes.

Contemporary Residence in Lebanon Surrounded by Fountains and Palm Trees

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 07:15 AM PST

The Ghazale Residence is a contemporary three-story villa in Lebanon, the result of a collaborative work between architects Gilbert Zarka and Sahar Ghazale. Here is the description we received from Sahar: “Located in Chtoura, in the beautiful Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, this residence stands out in terms of design. It is the only such modern building in the area, as opposed to the traditional designs surrounding it. On the exterior facades, we used Basalt stone in both white and grey, and Béton brut (architectural concrete). You will notice several volumetric elements such as concrete pergolas, a 13m high chimney and high glass structures allowing as much light as possible into the house. One of the main features of the garden is the shallow pool with fountains and teak wood pergolas.

The owner is a person who loves his garden and cherishes every single plant, thus requested numerous water features and a beautiful olive tree he raised on a separate hill. Palm trees which are usually synonymous with humid and hot areas such as the gulf, composed a large portion of the plantation in the garden of this villa, something which is unusual for this specific location. The interior design is a continuation of the exterior. The basalt stone continues to the inside on numerous walls. A red wall supports the main staircase. Apart from that all finishes are in neutral tones indicating luxury and simplicity. Wood used on the ground level is Palisander which contrasts beautifully with the dark tinted walnut doors. All doors were in the form of panels reaching ceiling height.”
