Mary Tyler Moore to Have Brain Surgery to Remove Tumor

Funny lady Mary Tyler Moore is scheduled to have brain surgery to remove a benign tumor on the tissue lining of her brain.

While this may sound drastic, it is actually a fairly routine operation and is done every day in operating rooms around the country.

Her rep released the following statement,

"At the recommendation of her neurologist, who has been monitoring this for years, and a neurosurgeon, Mary decided to proceed with this fairly routine procedure".

Moore, 73, was born in Brooklyn to an alcoholic mother and had a troubled childhood. She admits to having problems with alcohol in her past and is an insulin dependent diabetic.

Moore lost her only sister Elizabeth to a drug overdose in 1978 and her only brother of cancer after a failed attempt at assisted suicide. Her troubled son Richie shot and killed himself in 1980.

While Moore had many small roles in movies and television in her early career, she is best known for her roles in The Dick Van Dyke Show, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Phyllis, Rhoda, The Mary Tyler More Show, and more recently on the hit TV show Hot in Cleveland.

Doctors say this type of surgery is fairly common and expect Moore to come through without any major complications and make a full recovery.

Good luck Mary.
