Should Journalists Be Licensed?

That's the question posed at Gigaom.

It all comes down to the definition of blogger/writer versus journalist. I guess some people have trouble distinguishing between the two, and that's understandable.

Here's my take. Even though I've written for newspapers, magazines, trade journals, and websites (and was even a finalist for a Peter Lisagor award), I have never considered myself a journalist.

I have done some reporting. I have created some content that involved original reporting. But I have never considered myself a journalist.

The reason is simple: I have too much respect for journalism. I'm just a writer that sometimes covers the same ground as journalists, but I've never been trained in the art (and it is an art), I don't know all the rules (and there are actual rules), and I've never paid my dues in the field (actual shoe-leather-type work).

Those are actual journalists.

The rest of us are not.

I actually would have no problem with journalists being licensed (unlike the writer of the article linked above) if it helped the reader distinguish between writers and journalists.

I don't think we're the same thing at all.
