They felt the need to respond because an internet petition was being circulated asking Sesame Street to have Bert & Ernie get married in support of gay marriage. Here's what PBS said about that petition: "Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."
Can I also point out that Bert and Ernie are supposed to be kids? Since when do kids get married; gay or straight?
Now Big Bird and Snuffy...that's a whole different story. Those two could host their own show on Bravo.
